This book has left a very profound effect on myself. I suppose I began to read it to try and make sense of why over people would make a journey from San Francisco to Guyana in South America to form their own Shangri-La or utopia in a place called Jonestown, named after the charismatic demagogue of a leader called Jim Jones/5(). “It will take more than small minds, reporters’ minds, to fathom these events. Something must come of this. Beyond all the circumstances surrounding the immediate event, someone can perhaps find the symbolic, the eternal in this moment – the meaning of a people, a struggle – I wish I had time to put it all together, that I had done it.

Jonestown and Other Madness book. Read reviews from world’s largest community for readers. Straightforward, no-nonsense poetry about being Black, female /5.

My rating of this book is really more stars. I just felt that I had to offset the only other review of this book (which is angry and ignorant). Pat Parker was a black Lesbian activist poet who lived in Oakland during the sixties and seventies among the hundreds of folks who would later go off to form the ill-fated Jonestown community/5(6).

But, as Ms. Parker states in her introduction, the poems are not primarily about that tragic event (a few are) but are inspired by the media treatment of Jonestown and how people process the "normal madness" that surrounds us.

Having said that, this book of free verse is not the best book of poems I've ever read/5(4). Jonestown exposes his corruptibility, constant fits of rage, willingness to lie freely and his need to dominate his surroundings. But this book isn't the jeerfest I thought it'd be either. Masters goes well out of his way to point out Jones' dedication to every single piece of correspondence sent in by his listeners, his humanitarian /5.

The People's Temple led by Jim Jones, & the Manson Family led by Charles Manson, were two of the most spectacularly destructive apocalyptic cults of recent decades. They were also remarkably similar. At Jonestown inJones led over community members into a mass suicide/massacre at his command.

In Los Angeles inCharles Manson led his followers. Guinn recently sat down with Yahoo Entertainment to paint a clearer picture of how the Jonestown tragedy transpired, drawing parallels that he sees between Jim Jones and a leader like President Donald Trump.

To Guinn’s surprise, when researching for his book, he discovered that Jim Jones was a great leader in the American civil rights movement. On the other hand there are novels like Wilson Harris’ Jonestown, or Fraser Sutherland’s book-length poem Jonestown, which critics would consider good literature.

We can make the same distinction between the simple yet powerful line drawings by San Francisco artist JoeSam, and the velvet paintings of Jim Jones by Jack Malebranche.

Laura Woollett's book is the culmination of years of research on the Jonestown massacre. down at an airstrip as they attempted to flee the madness that enveloped Jones’ Guyana-based commune Author: Stephen A Russell.

Seattle Times - Kevin J. Hamilton "A powerful account of Jones's life Guinn's blow-by-blow account of Jonestown's final days in the book's last chapters is riveting." BookPage/5(8).
